Happy Turtle Tuesday to everyone. I have been thinking about posting a short video clip of sea turtles for quite some time and today I am finally doing it.

Please comment on what you think works the best or any suggestions that you have. I am planning on posting a short 60 second clip every Tuesday.

Tsunami effects on sea turtles habitat

As I watched the live coverage of the surging water in and out of Hilo bay my thoughts were not on the big wave that might crash ashore but on the inhabitants of the shore lines whose habitat's were put thru a what amounted to a blender. We humans knew what was coming and were given fair warning.
So today my hope is that not to many of these inhabitants of these awesome reefs will not wash up on shore injured or dead. And that my friends the Honu who love to hang on the beaches and bask were some how out to sea and not caught in any of these strong surges. Only time will tell.

A new journey

Great news from the film festival front. I have submitted The journey of the turtle photographer to 22 film festivals that are being held all over the US.
This morning as I was checking me e-mails I found the following message;

Great film. Your film will play Saturday, March 13th at the 2010 Davis Film Festival. Please send a CD press kit ASAP to:
Davis Film Festival, 920 Cranbrook Court #54, Davis, CA 95616. Please include a blurb about your film, and photos that
are at least 300 dpi for our local newspapers. Thank you.

So the new journey begins by way of Davis CA. It will be great to see the film on a big screen and to hear what people have to say.

Journey of the turtle photographer (The Movie)

Happy turtle tuesday to all. The movie is finally all finished and now the real work starts.If you would have told me a few years ago that I would be filming, writing,narrating,and funding a 26 minute movie I would have called you crazy well it has happened and now I am going crazy.

The next crazy thing that I am embarking on is to enter this little documentary in up to 30 film festivals across the country.I am not only entering them I am planning on going to the ones that accept us as well.

It looks like it will be a very busy year.

Sea Turtles need our help

WE NEED YOUR HELP!


The Rehabilitation Center is running low on necessary supplies due to the "Cold Stunned" turtle emergency.

As of Monday, January 11, 2010 we have 71 turtles in a facility originally designated to house 7 sick or injured turtles. We are in need of funds for medical supplies to care for the turtles.. The Center is rapidly going through towels and other medical supplies.

We have received more than an entire year's worth of turtles in less than four days. Although the program was funded for the entire year, we are rapidly depleting those funds. In the end, we will likely expend more than $25,000 to care for these cold stunned turtles.

The turtles are falling victim to the cold weather. As reptiles, they don't generate their own body heat, so when the temperature drops, so do their body temperatures.

When their body temperatures falls below 60 degrees, they become immobilized and float to the surface. The cold weather puts sea turtles in all sorts of trouble: On top of making them lethargic, it suppresses their immune systems, which makes them susceptible to pneumonia and other diseases. Worse, when turtles go into cold shock, they float to the surface, which places them at risk of being struck by boats.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Inc. is the non-profit arm that is funding the Rehabilitation Center. Any donation level will help with this marine turtle emergency. Every turtle we are able to save is increasing the nesting population in the next five to fifteen years.

The Honu of Hawaii

Happy Turtle Tuesday to all,
I am just finishing up editing in the music and the narration on my first real movie.
It is titled the Honu of Hawaii and is 26 minutes long and as you probably guessed it was shot in Hawaii.

The website along with a 2 minute trailer should be live early next week. I am planning on entering this movie in at least 25 film festivals in 2010.

Welcome back. With all the news lately about governments all over the world changing or down grading protected areas for wildlife . I am saddened and am wanting the photographs that I have taken to be seen.

This picture is of a Leatherback Sea Turtle that has just emerged from a nest.

Currently there are 2 countries that are down grading protected areas. These gentle giants are already threatened and now with important nesting beaches soon to be developed it is only a matter of time before all we have left are photographs to remember
It is unfortunate that in this economic climate that the lives of endangered species are being pushed aside for economic gain.

Sorry for the long absence. I have been in Hawaii working on the final footage that I needed to finally get the short 21 minute film that I have been working on shot.I have a deadline that I have to meet to get this finished by so that I can submit it to The International Wildlife Film Festival.

Welcome back. Today we are heading over to the Big Island of Hawaii. This picture is of 2 Green Sea Turtles that have crawled out of the ocean to bask in the sun. These 2 were really close to the water line and every time that a wave would roll init would wash over them. The turtle on the top was content with sleeping thru all of this,On the other hand the turtle on the bottom was very aware of everything. It was fun watching and photographing these 2.

A Sea Turtle Picture A Day # 216

Welcome back. Today we are heading down to a Sea Turtle hatchery in Mexico. At this hatchery they collect the Sea Turtle eggs after they have been laid by the turtles and then they are re buried in a secure area. Once the little hatching's emerge from the sand they are collected and released in the sand along the waters edge. You might be asking yourself why even collect them. Sea Turtle eggs are still being illegally collected for human consumption in some parts of Mexico and this is one way to help the survival of the hatching's.
