A Sea Turtle Picture A Day # 220

Welcome back. Today we are heading over to Hawaii. I just recently returned from a 10 day trip there to film Green Sea Turtle behaviour for a film that I am putting together. I will start to post short clips in the coming weeks of some of the shots.

This picture is of a Green Sea turtle that has crawled ashore to bask in the sun.

This picture was taken with a Nikon D-90 camera with a 70-200 mm lens.

See you tomorrow.

Sorry for the long absence. I have been in Hawaii working on the final footage that I needed to finally get the short 21 minute film that I have been working on shot.I have a deadline that I have to meet to get this finished by so that I can submit it to The International Wildlife Film Festival.

Again sorry for the long absence.

This shot is of Dr Ttodd Jones and I as we were sitting on the beach chatting and looking at these young Green Sea Turtles that had crawled out to lay in the sun.

Do you know where the other location is?
I will post the location tomorrow

A Sea Turtle picture a day #31

Welcome back to a Sea Turtle Picture A Day. Tomorrow I am going to be go on a trip to San Diego to help with a research project that will have me making fiberglass molds of Sea Turtles that will eventually be used in a wind tunnel experiment. I will post pictures that show the work in progress. My photography of Sea Turtles over the years has been fun and I not only have pretty Sea Turtle pictures I also have been involved in some scientific projects and have some awesome photos of some of the work we have done.

I would like to know from you the readers if it is OK for me to post some of these pictures as well? I don't know about you guys but the thing that I love about taking pictures of Sea Turtles other than the flooded cameras and the sand that somehow gets into all the gear that I use.Is being able to see how they really live and how they interact with each other and their environment.I would love to share these pictures with you as well.

Please post your comments and let me know if it is OK.

Today's picture keeps us at the beach. Here a Green Sea Turtle(Chelonia mydas)is basking. What struck me about this scene is one Sea Turtle is using another as a pillow.I was fun to sit there and watch these two turtles sleep in the sun.

See you tomorrow from San Diego

A Sea Turtle picture a day #29

Welcome back to a Sea Turtle Picture A Day. Today we are heading back above the surface of the ocean and heading to one of my favorite places to see Sea Turtles above the water. Koloko State park in Kona Hawaii is one of the best places to see turtles basking in the afternoon sun. This picture is of a Green Sea Turtle(Chelonia mydas) and was taken right as the sun was setting.

A Sea Turtle picture a day #27

Welcome back to A Sea Turtle Picture A Day. Today we are back on the surface at Koloko State park on the West Side of the Big Island of Hawaii. This Picture is of a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) That is basking in the sun.It has been out of the water for so long that the sun has given this turtle a dried out look.
To me this turtle looks like it is a dinosaur. It has evolved for over 150 million years to get to what I am taking a picture of.Just that thought is mind boggling.

A Sea Turtle picture a day #25

Welcome back to a Sea Turtle Picture A Day. Today we are heading back to Kona Hawaii. The picture for today is of a group of Green Sea Turtles that are basking in the sun. Basking is a behaviour that is only seen in Hawaii and the Galapagos. Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) Haul out onto the beach during the day to sun themselves. It is believed that the turtle throws sand on its shell to cool itself.
When the Sea Turtles bask it is a great way for non divers to see the turtles up close.

Today we are heading back to Hawaii.I had been walking along the beach at Koloko state park looking for Basking Green Turtles (Basking is a behaviour where turtles crawl out of the water to warm themselves in the sun).
