A Sea Turtle picture a day #11

Welcome back to a Sea Turtle picture a day .Today we are back in the Hawaiian Islands. Those of you that have been following this blog may notice that alot of my Turtle pictures are taken there. The reason for that is that The Hawaiian Islands are one of the best places in the world to see Sea Turtles up close.
Today's picture is that of a Green Sea Turtle(Chelonia mydas)that is in the tide pools looking for food.I sat along the shore line watching a few of these guys foraging.I was using a telephoto lens and patiently waiting for one of them to raise its head for a breath.I think that this is an awesome photo.
Picture taken with a 70- 300mm lens
See you tomorrow

a turtle photo a day: Day #4

Welcome back. Today we are going to be heading back down to Mexico to a little town called Rocky Point. It is about 2.5 hours south of Phoenix Arizona.
The reason I was there was for a turtle release. This was not just a regular release. This female Hawksbill( Eretmochelys imbricata)
was caught by local fishermen 8 years earlier. She has been held at a local school.
The release of this female turtle was a historic one. She is the first adult Hawksbill sea turtle to be released with a satellite transponder in the Eastern Pacific.
As you can tell by the photo there were a lot of people in attendance for her release.

a turtle photo a day: Day #3

This is was a really fun photo to take.It was taken at a sea turtle hatchery in Colima Mexico.I was volunteering there in August of 2008 and as part of my duties I had to release the hatchlings along the beach that had hatched the night before. This photo was taken right after I placed them in the sand.
They are Olive Ridleys(Lepidochelys olivacea)They are one of the most common sea turtle seen in and around Colima Mexico
A 60 mm macro lens was used to get this shot

A turtle photo a day: Day #1

Merry Christmas to all. This is the first post of this my new blog.

I am calling this blog  a turtle a day.I have hundreds ok maybe thousands of sea turtle photos that are floating around in my external hard drives. No one has seen most of these. So this is my chance to share these photos with the world.
I will post a photo a day and give a little history about the location the turtle and anything else that you would like to know about the shot.

This photo is of a Green Sea turtle.(Chelonia mydas). This turtle is being cleaned by cleaner fish. This behavior is a symbiotic relationship . The fish get a meal and the turtle gets the algae cleaned off of its body.
Taken On the Big Island of Hawaii in 2006.
The camera used was an Olympus 5050.My very high dollar underwater camera was broken so I used a friends inexpensive point and shoot camera and ended up with some of my favorite photos.

Check back tomorrow to see what I have pulled out of the hard drive.
