Welcome back to A Sea turtle Picture A Day. I want to thank all of you that check here on a regular basis. As you all know I like to give some factual information about what is going on in the picture as well as a little scientific info. It has been brought to my attention that some people are downloading these pictures and using them for personal use. It has taken me many years and many trips to get all of these pictures.I don't even want to think of how much money it has cost me in my fun little (hobby).

You are probably wondering what I am getting at here. Starting at day 60 I am going to start watermarking all of the turtle pictures that I post here in the blog. I will make it in a way that it does not obscure the picture but also that anyone wanting to download the picture will need to spend a lot of time in photoshop to remove it.

I am sorry that I have to do this but I need to protect my pictures.

Today we are heading back underwater to Hawaii. This picture is of a Green Sea Turtle(Chelonia mydas) that was laying on the bottom. When I swam near it I noticed the eye and how it was watching me. I just love the detail in this picture.

Welcome back to A Sea Turtle Picture A Day. Today lets head back over to Hawaii. If you have been visiting this blog for a while you will know that I have spent a lot of time in Hawaii taking Sea Turtle Pictures. Hawaii is one of the best places in the world to see Sea Turtles. It is one of only 2 places in the world where turtles crawl out on the beach to rest during the day. This behaviour allows people to get a close up look of turtles with out having to get wet.This is why so many of my pictures are from Hawaii.
So speaking of Hawaii lets go back there and today go underwater to a turtle cleaning station. A cleaning station is a particular part of the reef where organism go to be cleaned in this case it is where turtles go to allow cleaner fish pick the algae off of their skin and shell.
This picture is of just that. This turtle is in a resting pose. A resting pose is where the turtle rests on the bottom and extends its neck to allow easier access to those otherwise hard to reach spots. This turtle really didn't seem to mind me taking its picture.

Welcome back to A Sea Turtle Picture A Day. Today we are going to head back underwater and over to the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. This picture is of a Green Sea turtle(Chelonia mydas) that was resting under this overhang underwater. It was not at all disturbed by my taking its picture. It actually seemed curious in what I was doing. My favorite thing about Sea Turtles is watching the way they interact with their surroundings and also each other.

Welcome back to A Sea Turtle PIcture A Day. Today we are heading back underwater and over to the Big Island of Hawaii. This photo is of two Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas). The one that is coming out from under the ledge was resting there and the other was looking for a place to rest. The one leaving went up to the surface for a breath of air and the one doing the swim by then replaced the one that went for a breath under the ledge.
I is always so much fun to hang out underwater with these awesome animals and watch how they interact with each other.

This is a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) that was lazily swimming along the reef as I was diving there. As you can see on the back of its shell this turtle needs to visit a cleaning station to get some of that algae cleaned off.

This picture is of a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) swimming along the reef at a dive site in South Kona, This picture is pretty significant to me since this is one of the first pictures that I took underwater with a digital camera in a housing. There were so many little things to learn with taking pictures in a housing.

Welcome back to A Sea Turtle Picture A Day. Today we are heading over to the West side of the Big Island of Hawaii to one of my favorite places to see turtles in the world. This is the Turtle cleaning station.Todays picture is that of a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) being cleaned by Yellow Tang and Surgeon fish.
What is so amazing about spending time at a cleaning station is to just be able to see how different species interact with each other. The Sea Turtle gets its shell cleaned and the fish get a snack.

Welcome back to A Sea Turtle Picture a day. Today we are heading back to my favorite place in the world to see Sea Turtles. The Puako cleaning station on the Big Island of Hawaii
A cleaning station is a particular area of the reef where a particular inhabitant of the reef goes to be cleaned by another inhabitant. One gets a shower the other gets a meal.
In our case the Green Sea Turtle(Chelonia mydas)is being cleaned by Yellow Tang. The Sea Turtle gets the algea cleaned off of its shell and the Tangs get a snack.
I can swim in circles for hours and watching this and in fact I have and have many more awesome pictures to share with you.

A Sea Turtle picture a day #10

Welcome back to a Sea Turtle Picture a day.Today's picture is of a Green Sea Turtle(Chelonia mydas) that has crawled out on the rocks to Bask. Basking is a way that Sea Turtles warm them selves.
This picture was taken in Hawaii. One of the things that I like the most about this picture is the algae on the back of the turtle matches the algae that is growing on the surrounding lava rocks.
This photo was taken with a 70-200mm telephoto lens.

Welcome back to a Sea Turtle picture a day. Today we are heading back to the Big Island of Hawaii. This picture is of a Green Sea Turtle(Chelonia mydas).In this picture we have a juvenile Sea Turtle and a photographer. This lil guy was really intrigued with both of our camera systems and followed us both around for the course of the dive.
As I was composing a shot of the Sea Turtle it saw its reflection in my cameras dome port and got aggressive and was tying to bite the reflection in the dome ports glass.Neither the glass or the reflection were hurt.
This shot won second place in the 2008 Kona Classic photo competition.
It was taken with a 10-17mm full frame fish eye lens.

a turtle photo a day: Day #3

This is was a really fun photo to take.It was taken at a sea turtle hatchery in Colima Mexico.I was volunteering there in August of 2008 and as part of my duties I had to release the hatchlings along the beach that had hatched the night before. This photo was taken right after I placed them in the sand.
They are Olive Ridleys(Lepidochelys olivacea)They are one of the most common sea turtle seen in and around Colima Mexico

A turtle photo a day: Day #1

Merry Christmas to all. This is the first post of this my new blog.

I am calling this blog  a turtle a day.I have hundreds ok maybe thousands of sea turtle photos that are floating around in my external hard drives. No one has seen most of these.So this is my chance to share these photos with the world.

I will post a photo a day and give a little history about the location the turtle and anything else that you would like to know about the shot.

This photo is of a Green Sea turtle.(Chelonia mydas).This turtle is being cleaned by cleaner fish. This behavior is a symbiotic relationship . The fish get a meal and the turtle gets the algae cleaned off of its body.

Taken On the Big Island of Hawaii in 2006.

The camera used was an Olympus 5050.My very high dollar underwater camera was broken so I used a friends inexpensive point and shoot camera and ended up with some of my favorite photos.
